Ads Disallowed - Why?

This question is not answered

We sell knives - half of our site sells hunting, pocket and tactical knives the other half sells chefs knives. Our ads for chefs knives have been disallowed - we have been told that even if we have only ONE pocket knife on our site or in our store then we cannot ADVERTISE PPC (write ads specifically for) our chefs knives, poker sets, etc . When we responded that this would disallow PPC ad spending by Walmart, Amazon etc (because they do the same - sell hunting/tactical knives) we were told that we were right and someone would LOOK INTO the matter. When we asked for this persons supervisor we were told he was the highest we could go, period. When we called back and asked someone else for this persons superior we were given a name - when we talked to that person and asked for his superior he would not give it and would not even spell his last name. THEY CANNOT DO THIS TO US AND NOT THE BIG BUSINESSES. Below is the part of the response:

Mike

You said to me that if I had even one hunting or tactical knife on my site (no matter where), my pay per click ads (for anything else, ie chefs knives) would be disallowed.

This also applies to Walmart, Cabelas, Bass Pro, Amazon etc!

This looks like a good class action lawsuit for me and many other small businesses (including knife makers).

Please have your supervisor, boss or whoever get in touch with me by phone ASAP.

Thank You!

Tom Soboleski

Subject: SRX1174639563ID - Microsoft Advertising - Ads Disapproved

Dear Tom,

Thank you for recently contacting Microsoft Advertising in regards to your account. As we discussed on the phone, text ads will not be able to serve on your adCenter account based on the website you are using in your ads. I have attached an excerpt from our guidelines on disallowed content.

Weapons, knives, firearms, and ammunition

Advertising is not allowed that promotes firearms or weapons of any kind. Such content includes:

Knives as weapons

· Knives that are positioned as weapons or whose primary use is violence, including switchblade knives, disguised knives, buckle knives, lipstick case knives, air gauge knives, knuckle knives, and writing pen knives.

As we discussed on the phone, there are other companies, specifically amazon.com, that are selling disallowed knives and have ads serving on Bing and Yahoo. While we were on the phone, we determined that you could access, with just a few simple clicks, pages containing disallowed knives. I have submitted this specific situation for review and I do appreciate you bringing that to my attention. We certainly want to be consistent in what is allowed and disallowed.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you, but guidelines such as these are put in place to protect the experience of the advertiser as well as the user.

Thank you for choosing Microsoft Advertising. Your ticket number is 1174639563.

Thanks,

Mike Raper

  • Hello Tom,

Please know that we evaluate every ad against our Editorial Guidelines and do not evaluate ads against other ads.  Also note that we only pull ads on a reactive basis.  Rest assured that we do have many robust systems to ensure quality across the Bing and Yahoo networks; however, we do not proactively scrub the network for policy violations.  If you have found an ad that you believe to be in violation of our Editorial Guidelines, please feel free to submit the r-link in question.  We will review every r-link in question and take action where appropriate.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

  • Ricky What are you talking about?? Our ads for chefs knives were disallowed! I explained everything above - please respond to it or have someone else respond who will read it thru completely.
  • Hey Tom,

I apologize for the confusion. I'm having our editorial team review your ads again as I believe they misunderstood this post.

Thanks you again for your patience. :-)

  • Hello Toms,

As per our editorial guidelines that Mike mentioned, advertising is not allowed that promotes firearms or weapons of any kind. Such content includes:
    Knives as weapons:

    • Knives that are positioned as weapons or whose primary use is violence, including switchblade knives, disguised knives, buckle knives, lipstick case knives, air gauge knives, knuckle knives, and writing pen knives.

Because your site is advertising knives as weapons, this is considered disallowed content and is thus disapproved.  You are welcome to create a site that sells exclusively chef’s knives and we will gladly allow that site to serve.”

    Thanks!

  • I am not ADVERTISING knives as weapons - you have disallowed my ADVERTISING ON MSN for CHEFS KNIVES.

Both Walmart and Amazon and also Cabelas sell knives as weapons - are you going to disallow all of their PPC ads also?? or are you just going to discriminate against me??
